Live Search Macros from Microsoft

Posted by: seo4u on April 7th, 2007

MSN released Live search macros in March this year and people are yet to get the feel of its working.

According to MSN live search article “Search Macros are personalized search engines for any topic area of interest. You can create them, use them, share them with friends……”

Creating and using macros do not require the user to be signed in to Windows Live but certainly required to be logged in when saving and sharing the macros with friends and within communities.

I tried to create one myself here at http://search.live.com/macros but couldn’t understand or get any help from the help files provided. I tried using Trial and error (there was no error though!) method and developed few macros myself although they are still the product of insufficient knowledge so may not work the way MSN wants their macros to work. :P

But I have now grown more into search macros (as hell bent as I’m when wanting to do/learn something new) and can easily create and share macros in few seconds.

The very first step is to list websites from which you want the search results to be pulled based on your keyword(s). For instance if you want to search products from ebay.com, Overstock or Target stores, then you will need to list websites into the text area provided, one sites per line. With this you have defined the scope of search macro.

Website Listing

For Advanced version you need to write macro code like this into the text box provided to write your own code:

(site:ebay.com OR site:overstock.com OR site:target.com)

Now you can enter any product you want to search from the above listed websites in the “Text search” box. E.g you are looking for “4 GB USB Drive”. So your Text search box will look like below.

Text Search box

The search result will pull product listings from above websites selling 4 GB USB drive. Now it is time to save your macro and give it a name so that it is assigned a unique url where people can visit and use the search macro.

Save Macro Form

The saved macro can be viewed live at http://search.live.com/macros/webcontent_seo4u/searchproduct/

Search Engine Optimization as Branding Tool

Posted by: seo4u on February 17th, 2007

Just as brick-and-mortar companies take great care and efforts in creating, developing and sustaining strong brand image of themselves as well as their products, a similar strategy is adopted or rather needs to be adopted for online companies (and also the online arms of brick-and-mortar companies).

The stronger the brand is the greater is the possibility of consumers remembering the products the company sells whenever they feel the desire to purchase a product. That is stronger the brand and its awareness among the population, higher is the recall of the brand during purchase decision making process.

Similarly the fate of online firms getting qualified online traffic depends on how many times the firm’s website figures among the top searches every time a search is made for products they sell or services they offer.

Every time they appear in the top slots in the search engine result pages (SERPs), their listing- directly and indirectly - creates a credible position for themselves in the mind of the searchers and thus creating awareness and enhancing their brand image.

The more their website figure among the searches for popular keywords, the more their brand image gets enhanced/reinforced (gain credibility) and the better chances they have of prospect customers (who have just advanced from researching to identifying step in buying process) visiting them directly instead of finding them through the search process. Visitors may do an online credible check just to see if the brand image persists and also to confirm their impression.

Thus the process of search engine optimization doesn’t end with getting top rankings of their website. On the other hand it becomes more of a Brand awareness creation and reinforcement tool.

Firms have been using Paid advertising in the form of Pay-per-click advertising on popular search platforms like Google (Google AdWords) and Overture (a Yahoo! company) for branding purpose. Paid placements have been the most sought after marketing & advertising tool for firms for so many years now and if statistics are to be believed budget earmarked every year towards paid marketing or giving collective term- search marketing- has been increasing year after year.

But with growing percentage of marketing budget allocated for Organic SEO, it’s a good sign and also about time firms get a good understanding of their objective from search engine optimization campaigns.

Through search engine optimization process, websites are made search engine friendly so much so that they rank better then other websites in the search engine result pages (SERPs).

4Ps of Link Building Campaigns

Posted by: seo4u on December 9th, 2006

I was traveling in my car the other day and this thought crossed my mind: About exploring 4Ps of Marketing Mix (I know lot more Ps -3 Ps to be precise - have been added since its inception.) and extending it into Link building process.

Product
Product in marketing will be our website. Website which is being promoted for securing links, needs to be well packaged (should look good -visually attractive), should have attractive fonts and should create benefit to the linking site (so called the customer in marketing world, who will be deciding whether to link/buy or not.)

Like every company, every webmaster need to best present the website they are marketing for links so that it’s a win-win deal for both: the site linking to you and your own site.

A normal or badly designed website will have a less chance of securing good linking partners where as a professionally designed site will have little resistance to linking.

Price
Price of the product in marketing will be the SEO benefit/value the linking website will get from Link building.

In other words, “What price the linking website will pay when linked?”. Will it be profitable (get valuable link back, get PR benefit etc) to go for the linking or will it be a loss (gets flagged for linking to a BAD site) to the linking site?

Price is one of the most crucial factors bearing on the outcome of webmasters’ decision.

Place
Location of your product! That is how well your website is placed on the SERPs. It goes in marketing, if your consumers don’t know where your product is placed/available, how will be they able to know it and finally buy it.

Similarly, which place the linking website will find its link on (Home page, resource page, site-wide footer link etc) and how easily accessible (maximum 2 clicks away is acceptible) will be for other visitors (customers in marketing) visiting the site will determine if the linking is profitable or not.

Well placed link will find many webmasters, same as a well placed product will get noticed more and there is high chance of visitors buying it.

Promotion

A well promoted product will have many buyers and also have high recall value in buyers mind. Similarly, a well promoted website (lots of link-backs- high link popularity) will have no problem convincing other webmasters in linking to it.

So, initial promotion of the website so that it becomes an authoritative site, will have many website linking to it even without asking for it. For instance, Wikipedia, people link to it even when Wikipedia never asked them.

So, in the end you will see the same principles of marketing mix being utilized or practiced knowingly or unknowingly (those who are unaware of 4Ps/7Ps of marketing) while doing link building for their websites.

YouTube.com- Google’s newly purchase!

Posted by: seo4u on October 11th, 2006

After rumors of Google buying out YouTube.com, it is finally out that the deal is through with Google agreeing to pay U.S. $1.65 bn (£883m). It is to be noted that this is the most expensive purchase by Google so far, with last year Google being $130.5 million spent on to acquire 15 promising companies. :)

YouTube - a video-sharing portal where members post and share home made videos- launched in Feb 2005, has in a relatively short span of time grown to be the most visited social network site on the internet. With site visitors running into millions per month, it was a obvious target for Google, which had relatively low foot print in online video domain.

One of the interesting fact of the deal is that both the firm have a common financial partner- Sequoia Capital. Sequoia Capital, had initially invested in Google and sits on the company’s board and holds 30%.

Google with its already Google video never was able to take off in comparision to Yahoo! and was looking for such an avenue where it not only took lead but also integrated its search advertising business to generate revenue. This is where YouTube lacked; has no definite plans how to generate revenue from growing traffic and membership. So, this deal shouldn’t come as surprise.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, told investors that YouTube will be

one of many investments

Google plans to make in the video field.

Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim founded YouTube, Inc. on February 14, 2005 in a Californian garage. Later Jawed left for advanced degree at Stanford. Read more about youtube on http://youtube.com/t/founders.

PopRank- Is it PageRank Brother from MSN?

Posted by: seo4u on October 10th, 2006

The other day I was researching on how to develop a Vertical Search Engine or “Vortal” in Google and stumbled upon a very interesting yet not-so-popular (obviously!) research paper fromMicrosoft Research News & Highlights titled - Search Objective Gets a Refined Approach by Rob Knies.

Just in-case people don’t know what “Vertical Search engines” are, these are special search engines focuing their search within a particual domain (medicine/physics/biology/education/library/php etc)Â as against present day general search engines (Google/Yahoo/MSN)Â which are used to search wide variety of informartion.

Coming back to the research paper- it dealt with how to improve upon the present day search process to develop a more specialized search engines for specific domains. According to Wen and Nie - the researchers- “We want to develop a better search engine for some specific domains.

While doing pioneering research in the field of Vertical search (they call it- Object-Level Vertical Search) they coined PopRank.

PopRank is a link-analysis model to rank the objects (within a web pages such as databases, person, paper, organization etc) within a specific domain rather then rank web pages as a whole.

PopRank’s older brother PageRank-from Google- on the other hand rank web pages as a whole, not necessoraly from within a specific domain-Â based on certain algorithm called Search Algorithm.

That is to say PageRank ranks a webpage as a whole where an PopRank ranks objects which a web page on the basis of link analysis. Just like web pages are linked to each other, objects too are linked to each other based on corelations among them.

PopRank extends the PageRank by adding a Popularoty Propogation Factor (PPF) to each link pointing to an object.

A more detailed study of the paper can be done at http://www2005.org/cdrom/docs/p567.pdf.

SMO - Social Media Optimization- New SEO mantra

Posted by: seo4u on September 1st, 2006

Search engine optimization  (SEO) is under going a transformation; rather an extension to ways in which a website can be promoted. It is called Social Media Optimization (SMO).

In search engine optimization the objective is to optimize a website so that it gains top rankings in search engines such as Google, MSN or Yahoo!. Where as in social media optimization, you optimize a website so that more and more people link to it from community based popular sites such as Technorati, Flickr or YouTube. In other words get high visibility in communities based social media portals; thus the name social media optimization.

Since there is a growing trend for social media portals or consumer generated media portals, getting high visibilites can be very good for your business. Besides as more and more of the internet population is getting identified with one or more of these social netrworks, your business can’t ignore these avenues without loosing to your competitor.

You leaving? Danny Sullivan.

Posted by: seo4u on August 31st, 2006

Danny Sullivan - whose articles and papers on search engine working and more so on search engine optimization I read and grew up with to become an seo expert myself (lol), is planning to leave Search Engine Watch as well as Search Engine Strategies conference.

Danny had been my personal favorite as I’m sure he is of the rest of the world. He helped give shape to my seo skills when I needed to know how to promote an online shopping store to generate business. This was way back in late 90’s. I owe a lot to him for what I’m today.

Just curious to know the reason behind his move, I visited his personal blog. It is not uncommon to see these instances in professional world where you are forced to take corrective action when things don’t go the way they are promosied. You need to draw a line somewhere lest people keep taking undue advantage and take you for granted.

His move should sent strong signals to companies who do not keep their employees, more so the head figure, from whom you are identified with, will be open to such surprises.

A more detailed note on what is the reason behind his shocking yet logical move can be read on his blog - Daggle.

Web 2.0- New Horizon in making.

Posted by: seo4u on August 26th, 2006

Web 2.0 has been gaining too many supporters the world over. What is it anyway? Is it something totally radical as to change our web experience even better or it is a peped-up version of something what was already there but just didn’t get too much attention.

Web 2.0 is a Second generation Internet based services that let people collaborate and share information. The best example I can think of is http://www.myspace.com; the world’s fastest growing social networking portal ownded by Fox Interactive Media - a News Corporation Media unit- in which members collaborate and share information in various ways such a uploaing media files for members to share, share photos, share their views on things etc. Other famous examples are blogs, Digg, Del.icio.us, wikipedia to name a few.

BTW this is my first post with Qumana- desktop blog editor application. I had been using Performancing for Firefox for quite some time now.
